I'TIKAF AT MOSQUE
I'tikaf is a sunnah act of spiritual seclusion in a mosque, ideally during the last ten days of Ramadan, to worship and seekLaylat al-Qadr.
Participants must be Muslim, of sound mind, and remain in the mosque, engaging in prayer and Quran recitation while avoiding unnecessary socializing or leaving
Key Aspects of Itikaf at a Mosque:
Definition & Purpose:
It involves staying in a mosque to detach from worldly distractions and focus on Allah.
Duration:
While commonly performed during the last 10 days of Ramadan, there is no minimum time; it can be done for any period with the correct intention (Niyyah).
Location:
It must be performed in a mosque, preferably one where congregational (Jama'ah) prayers are held.
Rules & Restrictions:
Leaving:
Leaving the mosque without a valid (shar'i) reason (e.g., medical emergency, relieving oneself) breaks the Itikaf.
Invalidators:
Marital relations, menstruation, or, according to some, breaking the fast invalidates the retreat.
Activities:
Focus should be on dhikr, Quran recitation, and voluntary prayers.
Women and Itikaf:
While usually in the mosque, some scholars allow women to perform itikaf in a designated, private area of their home.
Important Requirements:
A clear intention (Niyyah) is required before beginning.
The participant must be in a state of cleanliness (wudu).
For married women, permission from the husband is required.
