CIVET COFFEE (KOPI LAWAK)

Kopi luwak (civet coffee) is a luxury specialty coffee made from coffee cherries that have been eaten, partially digested, and excreted by the Asian palm civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus). How It Is Made • Selection: Wild or captive civets eat only the ripest, highest-quality coffee cherries. • Fermentation: As the cherries pass through the civet's digestive tract, natural gastric juices and enzymes ferment the beans, which reduces bitterness and acidity. • Collection & Processing: The excreted beans are gathered, thoroughly washed multiple times, sun-dried, peeled, and roasted. Origins and Availability • Region: Originating in Indonesia (Sumatra, Java, Bali, and Sulawesi), it is also produced in parts of the Philippines and Timor Leste. • Price: It is one of the most expensive coffees globally, with prices ranging from roughly $100 to over $1,000 per kilogram depending on whether the beans are farmed or wild-collected. In Malaysia, specialty brands like Exotica Kopi Luwak sell 100g packages starting around 528 MYR. • Ethics & Controversy: High market demand has led to intensive captive-farming operations where civets are sometimes caged and force-fed coffee cherries, raising major animal welfare concerns. Genuine wild-sourced luwak coffee guarantees that the animals roam free. The ruling on drinking civet coffee is haru (permissible), provided that the coffee beans are completely cleaned of impurities and are in good condition (not broken or damaged). Summary of Rulings & Conditions • Impure Status: Coffee beans that come out with civet/civet feces are categorized as mutanajjis (impure), not something that is impure in substance. • Mandatory Conditions: • The coffee beans must not be broken, not perforated, and retain their original structure. • The coffee beans must be able to grow if planted (indicating that the seeds are not damaged in the civet's digestive system). • The coffee beans must be purified and completely cleaned of impurities before being processed, fermented, and drunk. • Authority's View: • According to the decision of the Federal Territories Mufti Department and the Fatwa Committee of the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs of Malaysia (98th Time), it is harus. • Civet coffee products marketed to Muslims are encouraged to have a Halal Certification Certificate from JAKIM or a recognized agency. • Some foreign fatwas such as the view from Kuwait (Ahmad Hujji al-Kurdi) forbid it oml Credits: #AIoverview #fb #JAKIM #FYPPP
