MANGOSTEEN AND CKD PATIENTS
Mangosteen is categorized as a low-potassium fruit that is generally safe for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients to consume, as long as it is taken in moderate and controlled quantities. Although mangosteen has various health benefits, CKD patients need to be careful with the sugar and certain mineral content in it. Benefits of Mangosteen for CKD Patients Low Potassium: Compared to other tropical fruits, mangosteen has a lower potassium content. This helps avoid the risk of hyperkalemia (high potassium readings) which is dangerous for the heart of CKD patients. Isogarcinol & Xanthone Content: Laboratory studies show that the xanthone and isogarcinol compounds in mangosteen have strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. They have the potential to protect kidney cells from further oxidative damage. Reduces Inflammation: These natural anti-inflammatory properties help reduce inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) in the body. Controls Blood Pressure: Nutrition in mangosteen can act as a natural mild diuretic. This helps reduce water swelling (edema) and helps control blood pressure. Important Things to Watch Out For (CKD Warning) Control Serving Size: According to kidney diet guidelines such as those from the National Kidney Foundation, limit your intake to around 4 medium-sized fruits per day. Sugar Content: Mangosteen contains a relatively high sugar content. If your CKD is caused by diabetes, excessive consumption can spike your blood sugar levels. Avoid Mangosteen Peel Extract: Although mangosteen peel is rich in xanthone, supplements or herbal medicines based on concentrated mangosteen peel extract are not recommended for CKD patients without medical supervision as they can burden the kidney's filtration function. To ensure that this diet is suitable for your current health level, please mention your medical specialist or share your current CKD stage for more specific advice. Credit: AIoverview.
