HOW TO COMMUNICATE WITH STROKE PATIENTS

HOW TO COMMUNICATE WITH STROKE PATIENTS

Strokes can occur in 2 ways

  1. Blood vessel to the brain is blocked by blood clot.

    • Blood flow to the brain is blocked due to blocked blood vessels. This causes blockage of blood vessels and blood flow to the brain is reduced. The lack of blood to the brain causing brain regions are suffering from a lack of oxygen and nutrients so the brain is dead.
  1. Blood vessel in the brain ruptures and bleeds.
    • Broken blood vessels in the brain and other tissues in the lining of the brain with blood. Blood covering the affected part of the brain exert pressure on the tissues of the brain causing the brain tissue surrounding the death.
  2.
    •

Both of these conditions cause comprehension and speech in stroke patients may be affected. In addition, the body may be paralyzed and the patient's attitude and memory may also be changed.
Stroke and Aphasia patients
First of all, family members / caregivers and the public need to understand that stroke can affect communication for those who experience it. Individuals who have suffered a stroke are often associated with the problem cannot speak after a stroke
Aphasia often hide their thoughts, ideas, personality and intelligence of a person, even if all these are in person. Aphasia patients may experience one or more problems either in understanding language or / and use the language as speech and problems in reading and writing.
Aphasia may also affect a person's memory.

How to Best Communicate with the Stroke Patients Have Aphasia?
Below are given guidelines for communicate  with stroke patients who issued Affairs Ministry of Health. Together every outlined my comments based on my experience to take care of paralyzed wife of 15 years and also the methods that I use to help his wife's stroke to recover. Thank God he was back in the conversation now healed as normal.

Things you can do to help a person suffering from aphasia
  • Reduce or eliminate interference noise / find a quiet place to talk. Eg closing tv / radio.
( Indeed, in the early stages of stroke patients is difficult to speak, and need to Susana a   quiet and silent to allow the patient to speak and understand the conversations of people who communicate with them ) ..
  • Get their attention before speaking and see their faces when communicating.
( It is normal at an early stage patients do not want to talk to people he does not know, even with the patient's immediate family would choose to communicate. Maybe he was embarrassed because speech is not so clear after the attack stroke .  Do not force if he does not want to communicate, if the patients will be forced to cry and feel depressed. Families need to understand these changes and it takes time for the patient to recover)
  • Only one person talks at a time.
(If a lot of people talking at one time the patient will confuse, and caused him difficult to understand what is to be conveyed to him. Therefore it should speak for (one to one) and use language that is easily understood and also uses facial and  body language . When I do this application  the patient is interested in communicating and within two to three months the healing process cause  conversation patients improved. When he was able to improve the ability to talk, the patient will be interested to communicate and families need for support, even in the early stages quite difficult we want to understand . Support their families (especially the family closest to the patient as he /wife, mother / father and children).
  • To communicate with adults rather childish way.
(Communicating with how people today will enable patients to remember the difficult words quoted back to him and he will bring back memories in his mind )
  • Sitting opposite / opposite the patient.
( This is the method I always do when communicating with the wife of a stroke. How these emotions can restore confidence to communicate and  patients mind  will feel that he was treated well even in difficult to understand conversations. After sometimes she will be able to restore memory little by little and it can also give confidence to the patient that he is still loved and cared for by the family even though he is seen as someone with a disability after the attack of stroke)
Helping people suffering from aphasia in understanding speech
  • Give only one piece of information at a time.
  • Give yourself plenty of time for them to understand what you say.
  • Talking to use short and simple sentences .
  • Use a slow rate of speech.
  • Use body gestures and facial expressions to help patient understand the message.
  • To writing and painting to support what you say.
  • To the question of yes / no. For example "I want some coffee?" from "Dad wanted to drink?"
Helping people suffering from aphasia in the message / their will
  • Give them time to express what they feel.
  • Encourage them to use other ways to help communication (body gestures, writing or drawing).
  • Look at the facial expressions and understand their facial expressions.
  • If the conversation that makes them feel frustrated, stop and talk about it back then.
  • Take a picture of a familiar, favorite magazines, articles or pictures they like to talk about it.
  • Wait for their response to give an answer after the question put to them. Be patience,
Conclusion, speech problem experienced by stroke patients have very high possibility for him to return to normal if the immediate family, especially families continue to provide support and help the patient to heal and  recover  back their ability to talk.
